Holmes May have Hinted at Divorce
Katie Holmes hinted at her state of mind in an interview conducted weeks before dropping her divorce bombshell, saying she was entering “a new phase” and “I know where I want to go.”
“I definitely feel much more comfortable in my own skin,” Holmes told Elle magazine when asked about being in her 30s, for an upcoming cover story. “I feel sexier. I think in my 20s, it’s like you’re trying too hard to figure everything out . . . I’m starting to come into my own. It’s like a new phase.”
Alimony Law Changes Urge
From USA Today:
A retired physician diagnosed with Alzheimer's disease 14 years ago, Morgan, 72, no longer walks or talks. His wife and full-time caregiver, Linda Morgan, makes sure he's fed and clothed, and that $25,200 in annual alimony is handed over to his ex-wife, a college professor he divorced in 1997.
"What's sad is that this man who can't get out of bed is paying a woman who is working," says Linda Morgan, 61, of Lehigh Acres, Fla.
Editorial Comment: Radical changes to alimony laws are long past due. In far too many cases alimony orders are absolutely absurd and grossly unfair.
Connecticut Supreme Court to Review Allegations of Fraud in Divorce Case
The Connecticut Supreme Court recently announced that it will hear a fraud lawsuit by ex-NFL player and investment firm founder Bob Simms against his ex-wife's lawyers. According to a Wall Street Journal report, Simms accuses them of failing to disclose $360,000 Donna Simms inherited in the midst of a dispute over Mr. Simms' alimony obligation.
The Connecticut Appellate Court previously ruled that fraud claims against counsel were barred because of the immunity that shields judges and lawyers from civil liability based on representations made in court. The court reasoned that people should be allowed to speak freely at judicial proceedings without fear of retribution that may hinder the legal process.
Donna Simms' lawyers deny the allegations against them.
